Landscapes of the Mind
This new series of composite lens-based work has developed from the 2021-2023 Forest of the Mind series and extracts similar principles of making ~ more about being in the landscape than being in a camera-space. It continues my investigation into the problem of situational making, as these images are recomposed from, and during walks.
Each image is equivalent to an act of walking, by which I mean a stacking up of image layers that individually represents a particular time, or place, or moment on that walk. A moment, time or place blended with other non-sequential experiences and observations ~ a stacking up of image layers that compress into the visual equivalence of the time spent walking.
I work in around the picturesque constructed landscape of Windsor Great Park, a place of layers, times and traces. I am not interested in clarity, focus or detail, but the glance, of something that might have been which fails to resolve on closer inspection. This is not about extreme encounter authorship, but working within the creative erotism of the immediate, and not the drawn out dullness of craft-based relationships (February 2024).
Images made & edited on location using an iPhone 13 ProMax, with Moment/Reeflex lenses. Printed on Hanemühle Photo Rag, Smooth Fine art Paper, edition 1/25
Words in progress:
Propositions, Æ
(a) About landscapes made through the camera lens that are not bound to ideas of photography.
(b) About images that act as carriers for words, a free floating exchange that attempts to stitch these layers together.
(c) About creating situations for representation, or situations in which representations might occur.
(d) About assembling layers in response to time-places & word-spaces.
(e) About images that act as visual notes from field experiments.
