One might think, then, of space, place, and landscape as a dialectical triad, a conceptual structure that may be activated from several different angles. If a place is a specific location, a space is a “practiced place,” a site activated by movements, actions, narratives, and signs, and a landscape is that site encountered as image or “sight" (p.x).

Landscape might be seen more profitably as something like the “dreamwork” of imperialism, unfolding its own movement in time" (p.10).

landscape is best understood as a medium of cultural expression (p.14).

Landscape is itself a physical and multi-sensory medium (earth, stone, vegetation, water, sky, sound and silence, light and darkness, etc.) in which cultural meanings and values are encoded, whether they are put there by the physical transformation of a place in landscape gardening and architecture, or found in a place formed, as we say, “by nature" (p.14).
