Thoughts on grey, the myth of purpose and our exceptionalism //

[ ]… but look again at the sullen formlessness of the grey-everyday, as it seduces through conformity and standardisation. Will our malleability through habit, ritual and tradition confirm that we are simply pattern processing machines – born out of pattern and destined to live out our lives as pattern? Familiarity gives meaning to life, cushioning our inherent time-dependency, allowing us to deal with the urgency of life – the human journey does not return, and the future is but a quack at the court of Chronos, carpe diem…[as] 

time is rhythm; not the recurrent beats of the rhythm but the gap between two such beats. The grey gap between black beats: the tender interval, writes Dr. Ivan Veen, the student of time in Nabokov’s Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle. His incestuous lover, Ada Veen, [succinctly] concludes the discussion by stating that we can know the time, we can know a time. We can never know time. Our senses are simply not meant to perceive it. It is like…  the sentence is never completed and we are excluded – denied any resolution. We are creatures born to navigate and live in an ever-changing present, the tender present of our lived experience – We must live, make do… 

[ ]… but what have we done? We have become the material of age and wear, the greyness of weariness, the expulsion of everyday kindness. Our time now is that of the Chthulucene , an epoch of greyness for our days of indifference – our dying together. A time too heavy to bear in that grey gap of time we call our lived experience, before we sit and sit forever in darkness. Our anxious being, a place where cupids lead-tipped arrows of hatred and loathing are forged…

[ ]… for this is the sullenness of lead, refulgent in youthful self-regard to then choke under an unbearable weighted cloak of grey – for the sleep is long and deep. Leads weight and malevolent neurological toxicity conflicts with its supreme malleability and stoic resistance to environmental decay – all beautifully antithetical conditions. A material set in both the mythic past and for our eco-anxious hyper-modernity, pulsing to kill both slowly and quickly…
