Dead Bells – 2014
Sand-cast lead, steel
14 x 10 x 10 cm (4 elements)
The ringing voices of bells have comforted man in times of despair, warned him of impending danger, and accompanied him in battle, in revelry, and in worship. Dead bells remain mute, incapable & ineffective /
“I go, and it is done; the bell invites me.
Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell
That summons thee to heaven or to hell.”
Macbeth (II, i, 62-64)
The Somme 2016, Part I, Acid Drop Copse Collective, Honeywood Museum, Carshalton. Work selected concerned making & destruction, creation & obliteration – metaphors perhaps for the fruitless actions and radical failures of this battle.
